During my senior year, I was named the head of communications for the largest fair of my university, Mercadexpo. As spokesperson for the fair, I was responsible for the public relation activities and was invited as guest speaker to over 40 national television and radio programs. This experience and exposure enabled other opportunities. I was invited to participate as a spokesperson for the Dominican Federation of Women Entrepreneurs, speaking on issues regarding the role of women in the workspace. During this process I worked with world-renowned companies such as Cosmopolitan Magazine, Coca Cola, San Juan Beauty show, among others.

Additionally, I began working on several entertainment segments for three important television channels in Dominican Republic. Ultimately, I was chosen to lead an entertainment program along with a prominent journalist called “Showroom”. Although short lived, the experience of producing a regular program was both humbling and invaluable, further cementing my passion for broadcast journalism. Through tears and a great deal of persistence, I launched my online portal, Rommy Online, featuring five different segments.

"As my journey continues,

I want to earn the respect

of my peers and those

in my personal life for giving

myself and voiceless

others, the opportunity

to strive and reach for

their objectives rather

than settle for less than

what they truly deserve."

Hi! My name is Rommy Pichardo, I'm 24 years old. I was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Dominican Republic. Currently I'm completing my MA in International Multimedia Journalism in the University of Kent. This is my story:

From an early age, I was exposed to being in front of the public eye when accompanying my parents to press conferences and company-sponsored events related to the family business. A seed was planted in me and I wanted to become a communicator. With the lack of undergraduate journalism programs in Dominican Republic, I enrolled in Marketing since it would teach me modern techniques associated with personal brand management and social media strategies.

I have to admit that the allure of being in front of a camera was one of the primary reasons for setting a goal of pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. However, throughout the journey, my perspective changed.

Several years ago I was impacted by a girl. Her passion and optimistic view on life inspired me. She lacked the economic resources for medications and the most basic means of mobility, which are unfortunately taken for granted in developing countries. I began to envision how I could have a broader impact on society via journalism.

I realized that this powerful career was not about me shining in front of a camera. Instead, it was about me being an instrument to be the voice of others. It’s about being a carrier of information and hopefully having a positive impact on society.
